Re: moustache fruit awareness
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 10:11 AMI'm so glad I joined this tribe and found out that it's toxic raw. I remember the first time I saw the moustache fruit in Oakland's Chinatown and how impressed I was by it's beautiful shape! I bought several just for the artistic possibilities. Now that I know how to eat them I can't wait to try 'em. They seemed more like a nut than a fruit to me, tho. Are they indeed a fruit? And, what do they taste like? And, what kind of wine goes well with them? -

Re: moustache fruit awareness
Sat, December 11, 2004 - 4:04 PMYes. It's fun to contemplate and open up. There is fluffy nutty stuff inside. It tastes like bitter almonds when eaten raw. Not that I know this. I've found out here that eating it raw is poisonous.
If you nibble on a little bit of the fruit (say 1/2 of an m&m size) you might find that you sweat, your stomach hurts and you feel kind of weird. Again, did I mention that it's not recommended to eat raw?
I found out that bitter almonds and some kinds of almonds are also poisonous. A site I found said that eating 20 or so bitter almonds can result in convulsions and death. Bitter almonds contain cyanide. Cyanide is not good. Did I mention that mustache fruit tastes like bitter-tasting almonds?
Some doctors say that people with cyanide poisoning have almond-y delicious breath. Bitter almond-y delicious belches sometimes happen.
Did I mention to cook it? Or maybe be careful about what strange nutty things you eat.
Did I mention not to eat it raw?
